This is a (loose) transcript of my youtube video
Hey Guys, it’s Kat and I’m here to talk to you about BLACK FACE.
In light of recent controversies, the YouTube community has taken to calling out problematic youtubers. I’m a huge fan of…
I’m sorry to say that as a white Dutch citizen, I also do not want ‘Zwarte Piet’ to leave. I know it is racist, and I know I’m being racist by wanting it to continue, but you can’t blame me for wanting to be able to raise my children as I was raised. In my opinion I’m not a racist person, I don’t make racist comments to people with a skin tone different to mine. I don’t like bullies, and I have had some experience in name calling based on something you can’t help (like having an English mother). Of course that’s not racism and it’s nothing compared to what Afro-American and Asian people get to endure but I like to think I understand at least a little. This is one of these things where I don’t understand what the big deal is about. I watched a lot ofDisney princess movies, but I’m not hunkering after men or dependent on them (except for my father who pays the bills of course). And in the same way I grew up with ‘Zwarte Piet’ and I am not degrading Afro-Americans. Because in the end were all the same on the inside, and that’s what matters.
I hope I have not offended anyone.
We might all be the same on the inside, but only we(white people) have the privilege of being judged for who we are on the inside. POC don’t get that chance, they’re immediately labelled for who they are on the outside. They don’t get to start out neutral like us, they are made ‘other’. That’s why statements like "we’re all the same why do we need labels" are bollocks.
Anyway as a white Dutch citizen, this is just not your call to make.
I mean let’s be reasonable here: would making Zwarte Piet some other colour(like the person’s natural skin colour, or the whole rainbow, whatever) detract from your children’s enjoyment of it all? No, they just like the excitement, candy, presents and festive atmosphere. Nothing about the whole Sinterklaas festivities hinges upon Piet being blackfaced.
So if nothing is taken away by doing away with the blackface-aspect of it, and it avoids a great deal of pain for some POC, then why not just go ahead and change it? It’s a win for everyone, nobody loses anything by it. Apart from the opportunity to perpetuate racism, I guess. Does that ‘right’ really mean so much to you? If so, why does it?
Could it be that you semi-conciously know that we’re not “all the same” but that you occupy a position of power, and that the Zwarte Piet thing is an expression of that power, which you defend because people like power? Think about it please.
